‘It made many people who, in their day to day lives in our society feel or are made to feel marginalised, neglected, invisible, lonely – it made these people feel valued, important, beautiful and cared about. I cannot express strongly enough how valuable that is – it brings tears to my eyes just thinking about the value of LGBTI+ Elders Dance Club’. – LGBTIQ+ elder.
A social event for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex elders and their allies.
LGBTIQ+ Elders Dance Club will celebrating the lives of LGBTIQ+ elders; from pioneers who bravely came out of the closet when homosexuality was still illegal or LGBTIQ+ elders who fearing recrimination, rejection or violence weren’t able to come out until very late in life. These elders risked everything so that LGBTIQ+ people enjoy the freedoms they do today. The project’s community engagement activities are structured with the intention to develop significant personal, creative and social outcomes over a number of years, connecting LGBTIQ+ elders’ participation through creativity and community.
Held monthly at the Fitzroy Town Hall, LGBTI elders are invited to this free social dance club to learn new dance moves, enjoy delicious catering and drinks, and socialise with other LGBTIQ+ elders and allies. Come along and learn new dances, enjoy nourishing catering and interact with other LGBTIQ+ elders and allies.
LGBTIQ+ Elders Dance Club champions the recreational and social rights of LGBTIQ+ elders, creating a regular space for the community that is safe and inclusive.
Fitzroy Town Hall, City of Yarra. Presented monthly in 2017.
